CRUMB #28

AUGUST-OCTOBER 2024

THE WORD

Here’s three months of open microphone happenings.

Comes a time to lay down the moments that will not let us go. Yeah, comes a time to close the door.  Across the cold fields winter creeps up from the estuary.  Chill evenings. Cold hope.  Time to take a break from the urgency of things; time took for warmer places to hang our hats, sing our songs, tell our poems.

So, the Dangerous Kitchen is off on its Winter break to reopen at the end of September. The Dangerous Microphone is taking a break too – down the long roads of America! We will turn the Microphone back on Wednesday 9 October.

Hey but Acid on the Microphone at the Mussel Inn will sizzling right through. Three events coming up. First, on 8 August,  singer/songwriters Callie Lamont and Mike Kennedy will be our guests at AOM along with our regular open mic session. On 19 September  AOM presents open mic all night. And thirdly on Thursday 17 October, we have the annual Golden Bay/ Nelson POETRY SLAM. Then in November we will be celebrating 30 years of Golden Bay Live Poets. Read all about them on the following pages.

Moonshine on the Microphone in Collingwood at NgAngs Gallery got two dates coming up in the next couple of months. Thursday 1 August (another great pizza night fundraiser for Mama Love along with open mic performers), Thursday 5 September (a cosy open mic night) and Thursday 3 October maybe another fundraiser and open mic. All the info further on.

So no CRUMB in September and just a couple of reminders during October.

Thanks to everyone who has been supporting, participating and raising your voice in poem and song at all the events over the last year. You have kept the flame dancing and without you these events would have no reason to be. Heart-felt thanks, peace and a whole lot of love.

Comes a time

Comes a time to lay them down
all the moments that will not let go,
to wake up from the dream
and the long night’s travelling show.

Comes a time to close the door
because there’s no one coming through,
hope got lost in a broken heart
and the song is long overdue.

Comes a time to say goodbye
to throw away the wasted kiss,
for the iron lips of loneliness
don’t belong in a place like this.

OPEN MICROPHONE SESSION

august ACID ON THE MICROPHONE

OPEN MIC IN AUGUST WITH SPECIAL GUESTS
CALLIE LAMONT & MJ KENNEDY

We had a most excellent open mic session at the Mussel Inn last month and we are looking forward to another night to remember come the 8 August. A little earlier in the month than usual for sure but what an evening we have got lined up for you.

The open mic session known as ACID ON THE MICROPHONE is the best opportunity on offer for you to make a stand at the microphone and give voice to your fledging craft of poem making and song singing.

There is no more supportive audience that at these sessions so let your nerves lose, step up to the microphone and let your real self be heard.

Open mic will run from 7.30 with Alanjahjah playing in the lead up. Following the break we will be treated to some stunning music from Callie Lamont and MJ Kennedy who will present some original songs and a couple of covers.

It is gpoing to ber a great night. You won’t want to miss it!

ACID ON THE MICROPHONE

Here’s a night to remember already! Local folk ‘n country duo,  singer/songwriter’s MJ KENNEDY and CALLIE LAMONT are taking to the stage at this month’s Acid on the Microphone as special guest of Golden Bay Live Poets Society.

Callie and MJ will perform a selection of original songs along with a few covers. Their vocal harmonies go together like marmalade and toast – delicious to say the least! Fiddle and guitar come to the party too, ricocheting off each other like gun fighters at a shoot out; be warned,  get in the firing line and you will be smitten with the rhythm and beat of the music.

Pictured left, Callie and MJ complement each other seamlessly with beautiful vocal harmonies, violin arrangements and acoustic guitar solos delivering a dynamic and enjoyable set of songs. You should not miss them!

Regional Poetry Slam

POETRY SLAM IS ON!

GOLDEN BAY/NELSON REGIONAL POETRY SLAM THURSDAY 17 OCTOBER ’24
LIVE. AT THE MUSSEL INN

A POETRY SLAM is a spoken word event where poets ‘slam off’ against each for the honour of representing the Golden Bay/Nelson region at the National event in Auckland in November.

Competitors come armed with three original poems, each no more that three minutes long. No props are allowed – just your voice.

The event is run over three rounds, with competitors dropping out until three are left in the final round. Each round is judged by random audience judges who mark each performance out of 10. After round one, the top scores go through to round two and from round two the top  scores go through to round three.

The winner will flown to Auckland to represent Golden Bay/Nelson in the National finals in November. So the winner must be prepared to travel to Auckland to represent the region.  Fares, accommodation and a little spending money will be provided by Golden Bay Live Poets Society, The Mussel Inn and NZ Poetry Slam.

Sound like you?  Enter the Slam by emailing: mark@drycrust.com

Here’s a brief summary of the rules:

• You will need three original poems, each one to take no more than three minutes to perform/read.
• Performed from memory is the norm for a Slam but for this regional event you may have notes to prompt you or you may read your poem if you wish.
• During your performance you will get a warning at 2 minutes 45 seconds and another at 3 minutes. For every ten seconds you go over the three minute limit you will lose half a point.
• Random audience judges will score you out of ten on both your performance and the quality of your poem. There are five judges. The top score and the bottom score are ignored by the score keepers and only the three middle scores count.
• The Slam will be run in three rounds; all  entrants will perform in round one. The  lowest scores will drop out for round two. Again, the lowest scores drop out at the end of round two and  the final round, round three, will consist of the remaining three performers.
