APRIL 2025

THE WORD

MISSING YOUR WATER

The Byrds got this song from a long time ago called “You Don’t Miss Your Water.”  The rest of the refrain goes,”… until your well runs dry.”

A true thing for sure. Like it’s about taking things for granted. Ignoring this and that. Not paying due respect to the things that we love, to the things that sustain us. Forgetting to visit old friends and new friends and staying in touch with family and community. When something is taken away, you realise just how important it was – or wasn’t – but then its too late because its gone. Stuff like freedom. Like water. Like friends. Like microphones.

Hope to see you at one the thirst-quenching open microphone events in April. Details on the following pages for  NgAng’s Gallery, The Dangerous Kitchen and the Mussel Inn.

Peace

You don’t miss….

I got to drink the water from a broken cup
And then with my eyes I forgot to look up
To the cottonwool clouds hanging in the sky
I didn’t realise they were just passing by

Knocked on the door of an old friend I had
There was no answer, I left there feeling bad
Maybe they had died and gone far away
Maybe I will come back and check another day

Saw a man in a striped suit, no shirt or tie
I knew I should have stopped and asked him why
He was standing in a stone room with iron bars
Someone had taken away all the yellow stars

Saw my sister lying with a pillow on her bed
She was trying to remember things in her head
I said, please don’t leave me standing here
All I have to give you is this silver stream of tears

Saw a girl speaking so softly no one could hear
The microphone was switched off over there
Out on the dusty corners of the devil’s street
The story-teller had  forgotten just how to speak

Pot luck tea and a handle of moonshine

Moonshine on the Microphone kicks off with a POT LUCK TEA starting at  6.00pm. This is so we can hang out together and remind ourselves just how lucky we are to be in such a gem of a community.

It won’t happen without you so bring some food to share and something refreshing to drink and head on down to Collingwood where the doors of NgaAgs Gallery will be wide open in welcome. And of course, starting around 7.30pm, there will be the very fabulous and very intimate Moonshine on the Microphone open mic session.
The microphone in Collingwood has been a little lonely of late but it is still turned on! Remember the song – you don’t miss your water until your well runs dry….. So you are welcome from Rockville and Bainham, Pakawau and Puponga, Milnthorpe and Parapara and beyond. Come, join in the pot luck tea,!

NICK FEINT @ LIVE POETS

Singer/songwriter NICK FEINT will guest at the monthly gathering of Golden Bay Live Poets on Thursday  17 April. This will Nick’s last gig before he and partner Rose welcome a new baby girl due in May.  Featuring a couple of new songs as well as all the hits – ha, ha, he says – Nick will be joined by some special musical guests.

Is everybody talkin’ ’bout this local guy, this singer/songwriter? You bet. take a read.

“Singer-songwriter Nick Feint has an innate ability to bring in depth stories to life in his songs with heart and good humour. Bearing traces of Billy Bragg, Nick’s musical mix of wordplay and direct emotion makes for a strong and satisfying set. Check out his next live show.” Charlotte Yates, Musician

‘Touching on life’s moments big and small, Nick performs his own, heartfelt songs with integrity and confidence’. Jane Dixon

The first time I listened to Nick I thought “They are good songs! I’m now more aware of the lyrics and think “They are extraordinary songs!” Nick sings of significant life moments in a richly lived life. He’s candid and insightful. There’s no mystifying abstraction rather growth, courage, wisdom and love. It’s not just listening to music; it’s meeting the man.  Bill McEwan
