Crafting a community family

Every time we stand behind the microphone, step over fear and stand on nervousness to speak and sing, we strengthen our own hearts, we build community, we become family. And what a strong community family we have become in 2022!

To everyone who has read a poem, sung a song, played a tune or talked about their craft at one of our open microphone events, thank you so much. You have enlivened your own soul and fed hungry hearts, boosted your confidence and had a heap of fun and fellowship while doing it.

And to our audience who have shown up regularly, you are the cornerstone of community, thanks and gratitude. Without you, the nights would be rather empty. And what a feast of entertainment and social engagement you have been treated to.

To our venues, thanks for opening your doors and your hearts. Thanks for standing with us.

Summer is upon us! Keep a look out for events happening around the Bay. Some are listed here in this issue of Crumb – but not all.

Stand

You stand up behind the microphone
you speak the words you have written
you are not silent
you sing your song
it hangs in the room
lingers on the faces gathered
your words quicken the beat
of your own heart
they stir the shadow eyes of strangers
set fire to the stones on the beach;
this is obedience
to be who you are
to speak what you know
to say what you think
all the while
holding love in your hand
tasting the strength
of your own spirit;
you stand behind the microphone
you stand on the street corner
in your own kitchen.

MAD MOON RISING

Yep. Moonshine on the Microphone is on this Thursday 1 December. Won’t you come on down, have a sip or two of moonshine, speak a little of your heart in the moonlight, sing a tune to the fugitive moon, kick back and relax on the first night of summer?

It won’t be the same without you because it’s all about community; about family and standing together. Finding strength and courage in the company of friends. It’s all about the poem, the words carved into hearts of flesh by the blade of the voice. It’s all about the song, the tune on wings of spirit, rippling through the still evening air.

There is a place for everyone here at the MAD Cafe. So bring your stories, your words, your music, your songs and yourself and make your way to Collingwood for a night on the town!

Rapping up the year

Golden Bay’s original poetry open mic event is saying goodbye to 2022 with a rousing night of poem and song.

Featuring the gorgeous music of singer/songwriter ELLA KEITA and
the poems of MARK RAFFILLS

We will get the words rapping with a whole lot of open mic to kick the evening off.  Songs and music too. Stories as well.   Refreshing beer (move over Captain Cooker, here comes Murky Turkey!!), tasty food, great company. Get together, build community, strengthen your heart. Poets and singers – register on the night. See you there!

the danger lies in silence

 A LONG NOISY SUMMER ON THE DANGEROUS MICROPHONE

The sun don’t shine when alternative voices are silent. But at the fabulous open mic event known affectionately as The Dangerous Microphone, the alternative voice is anything but silent and the sun is always shining!!

What a thing to look forward to. Wednesday nights at the Dangerous Kitchen where the welcome mat is always extended and the doors are open to all.

What a community, what a family we have all built up there. Poems and songs and tunes and stories and provocations too. A smorgasbord of delight! And do you know what – the Dangerous Microphone will be feeding-back, loud and clear, all summer long.

We will be starting a bit later from Wednesday 7 December, around 6.30pm; that will give you a little more time at the beach! But this week, 30 November, 5.30pm is still the start time.

So come on down for the best entertainment, great food and refreshing drinks from the kitchen and bar and simply wonderful hospitality from the friendly Dangerous Kitchen staff.

And big-hearted thanks to Barrett and Neil for the PA system and sound management – and to Sol and Dan for helping out. We would not be heard without you!

Performers, you can book one of the seven minute slots from 5.00 pm at the Dangerous Kitchen.

HERE’S A FEW

A huge and mighty congratulations to Emma Callaghan who represented Golden Bay/Nelson in the NZ National Poetry Slam in Auckland last weekend! What a time it was! Emma made it through to the second round and on the way won the ‘Spirit of the Slam’ Award. Big effort there!! “She smashed it,” said the organisers. “She was amazing.”  Thanks to Golden Bay Live Poets Society and the Mussel Inn for the generous sponsorship of travel, accommodation and a little cash that made it possible for Emma to get to Auckland and compete.  “What a time I had,” said Emma, “Thanks to everyone for the wonderful support.” GB Live Poets will feature Emma at one of our events early in the new year.

Hey, LUKE HURLEY is coming back to the MAD Cafe, for another street-side gig. Was great a couple of weeks back to see the Collingwood pavement alive with the sound of music. Catch Luke on Saturday, 3 December from 4.00 pm. at the MAD Cafe in Collingwood. Koha.

So good having the HAEWAI COLLECTIVE with us last month. Their original folk/pop songs made for great listening. You can listen again and again on Spotify – search for Janine Mitchell – or you can purchase your own copy of their CD by emailing: janinemitchell@ts.co.nz

NICK FEINT has a couple of out-of-town gigs coming up. Check him out if you are in the vicinity. Saturday Friday 2 December, RED 16 in Nelson, 8.00pm. Saturday 17 December, Riverside Community, Lower Moutere, 7.30 pm.

 

 

a gREAT rAW
The PEACE Co-Op Theatre Company presents a theatrical debate on war and all its greatness. Inspired by the book “We will not cease” by NZ’s own ARCHIBALD BAXTER, conscientious objector, farmer & father of poet James K. Baxter, “a gREAT rAW” combines clown, buffoon, music, poetry & multiple masks to tell these tales and unmask the fraud of the WW1 narrative. A pop up performance at the MAD Cafe in Collingwood, Sunday 11 December 4.00 pm.
